Principles of Finance is an introductory course in finance; it assumes no previous study of finance. The course aims to provide students with the tools that they will need to proceed to more advanced study of finance. These tools include: an understanding of the time value of money, the ability to calculate present and future values in a variety of financial contexts, an understanding of how to measure financial risk, an understanding of the tradeoff between risk and return, the ability to interpret financial statements, and knowledge of the functions of financial institutions including commercial banks, investment banks, brokerages, and central banks.
