Gain both theoretical and evidence-based practical skills in this accelerated online FNP program as you prepare to sit for one of two FNP exams – the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) board certification or American Academy Nurse Practitioners (AANPCB).

For the Master of Science – Family Nurse Practitioner online, the curriculum comprises 17 courses for a total of 42 credit hours.

Duration: 7 weeks

This course provides an opportunity for the student to examine nursing theories and select theories in the social sciences and philosophies in nursing science and the role they have in the support of advanced nursing practice. Multiple ways of knowing and interprofessonal knowledge is explored. The student will analyze the impact of advances in nursing theory and nursing science on healthcare, technology and patient outcomes which will support decision making in the delivery of patient centered care.

This course examines the development of leadership styles and policies that transform healthcare systems. The principles and factors relevant to leadership will be explored in relation to complex organizations. Students will learn quality indicator assessment to develop and plan for execution of quality improvement plans. Value based care and interventions will be discussed to assure quality and cost containment.

This course provides a critical knowledge base in the core principles of evidence based practice. Students will learn how to find specific evidence, how to appraise and analyze the evidence and then communicate the evidence in a scholarly way utilizing papers, and presentations. Students will use their skills to identify a specific health care related issue, then find and apply the most current evidence that identifies the needs while supporting the solution to that issue. This class provides the foundational skills necessary to find and use evidence to support individual practice, and appropriately apply evidence to different population based settings.

This course provides an opportunity for students to assess ethical and legal issues confronting nurses and other healthcare providers in a variety of healthcare delivery settings. Each module is an opportunity to identify and analyze legal and ethical concepts plus the principles underlying nursing and healthcare. This course examines theories and values applied in ethical decision-making that are related to a variety of ethical dilemmas in nursing practice and healthcare. This course promotes a review of regulations under which professional nurses practice and highlights the impression that ethical and legal issues are often not mutually exclusive.

This course fulfills criteria for graduate level pharmacology in an advanced practice nursing program. Advanced pharmacology focuses on the critical pharmacological and therapeutic information in the treatment of health conditions that are commonly encountered by advanced practice nurses. Emphasis is placed on understanding the decision making process necessary to safely and effectively prescribe and monitor pharmaco-therapeutics to the appropriate client. This course will prepare students for their role in everyday healthcare while introducing the latest updates on drug information.

This course focuses on pathophysiological concepts and processes related to the health care of populations across the life span. This course will examine common pathophysiologic processes and related theoretical, research-based, scientific knowledge of frequently encountered primary care conditions. Advanced practice nursing students will have the chance to analyze the risk factors, pathophysiological changes, and associated clusters of signs and symptoms of these conditions in depth and apply this knowledge into clinical practice to provide advanced nursing care to diverse populations.

This course provides a foundation for patient assessment and the development of diagnostic skills across the life span for advanced practice nurses. This course is comprised of a 4-hour lecture and has a lab co-requisite, NUR5120L, that requires students to simultaneously complete 60 clinical laboratory hours. This course will emphasize how to utilize physiological, psychological, sociocultural, genetic, and developmental assessment skills across the lifespan. Students will learn how to formulate differential and clinical diagnoses through physical examination and assessment. NUR 5120 Advanced Physical Examination & Fundamentals of Diagnostics requires a 2-hour weekly synchronous online evening session.

This is a two-credit live clinical laboratory component of the Advanced Physical Examination & Fundamentals of Diagnostics course. This course requires 60 supervised clinical laboratory hours and provides a foundation for patient assessment and developing diagnostic skills across the lifespan for advanced practice nurses.

This is the first class of three Advanced Family Nursing Practice (AFNP) classes. AFNP-I mainly focuses on pediatrics and women’s health. This course aims to prepare family nurse practitioner students for delivery of primary care to children and women. This course and its required practicum hours will provide opportunities for FNP students to learn how to promote health and prevent illnesses, and diagnose, treat, and manage conditions related to children’s and women’s health in primary care.

Credit Hours: 2
This is the first Practicum of three Advanced Family Nursing Practice (AFNP) practicum experiences. AFNP-I focuses on pediatrics and women’s health. NUR5130C Advanced Family Nursing Practice-I Clinical Practicum Experience (CPE) is 2 credits and the FNP student will need to successfully complete 90 clinical hours in pediatric and 90 clinical hours in women’s health settings in order to be successful in NUR-5130 Advanced Family Nursing Practice-I.

Seminar is an important component of Advanced Family Nursing Practice-I that will address contemporary issues such as telehealth, health informatics, global health concerns and holistic modalities in advanced practice nursing. It is a 1 credit (15 hours) course and students are required to receive “Pass” in order to be successful in NUR-5130 Advanced Family Nursing Practice-I.

This is the second in a series of three Advanced Family Nursing Practice courses. AFNP-II mainly focuses on the adult population with non-complex common primary care problems. This course aims to prepare Family Nurse Practitioner students for delivery of primary care to the adult population. This course and its required practicum hours will provide introduction to primary care and opportunities for FNP students to learn how to promote health and prevent illnesses, and to diagnose, treat, and manage conditions in primary care.
